Peer Grief Support Groups

At Desert Blooms Grief Center, our mission is to ensure no child, teen, or their family have to navigate the individually unique and complex experience that is grief, alone. That is why the support we’ll provide is through facilitator-led peer grief support groups. Peer groups offer connection and comfort amongst those also grieving the loss of a loved one. They are able to bear witness to one another’s healing, and to lives being rebuilt.

What To Expect

Every group will have a trained, volunteer facilitator who will lead the participants in an age-appropriate topic of conversation and/or activity that encourages discussion and expression of their experience. The groups offered consist of the following ages: 5-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-18, and a group for their parents/guardians. This support is free of cost and it is up to the families to decide how long they attend.

If the space we find is able to accommodate all of the groups, we will choose Thursdays from 6 to 8PM. If the space is not large enough, our plan will be to divide the groups between Tuesdays and Thursdays. This means that our facilitators would also be split up between the two group evenings, but these details will be confirmed as soon as we are able to.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to join a group?

Nothing. All of our support groups are completely free for children, teens, and their caregivers.

Do I need a referral or insurance?

Nope. You don’t need a referral, diagnosis, or any kind of insurance. Just contact us, and we’ll help you get started.

How often do the groups meet?

Groups meet once a week in the evening. Sessions are structured but relaxed, with time for group activities, expression, and connection.

What happens in a group session?

Each session is different, but activities may include discussion, journaling, storytelling, art, or play. Everything is guided by trained facilitators and tailored to the age group.

Can we join if the loss happened a long time ago?

Yes. Grief has no expiration date. Whether your loss was recent or years ago, you're welcome here.

Is there a group for parents or caregivers?

Yes. While kids and teens are in their age-based groups, caregivers meet in a separate group to share, support each other, and learn ways to help their children through grief.
